“I’m unorganized and upset. I should’ve had this together already.”
That was the message I received from a client this week. A deeply human, deeply familiar feeling that many solopreneurs know all too well.
He felt frustrated, maybe even ashamed. But what he saw as failure, I saw as something else entirely: progress.
Because frustration isn’t a sign you’re falling behind. It’s often the signal that you care. And he is standing at the edge of something new.
We’ve all been there—the moment we start something unfamiliar, whether it’s a fitness program, a new diet, or learning a language. We imagine we should be better at it by now. We expect ourselves to adapt instantly. To master new routines, habits, and information overnight.
But real growth doesn’t work like that.
Give yourself the same patience and care you’d offer a loved one. You wouldn’t judge them while they’re learning. Please don’t judge yourself more harshly than you would others.
Why Small Consistent Actions Matter in Business
James Clear reminds us of a powerful truth:
‘The most overlooked truth in life is that everything worthwhile is built through small, consistent actions.’
Whether you’re increasing your fitness, learning a language, picking up an instrument, or building a business, the path is the same: Lesson. Practice. Progress. Repeat.
There’s a reason new drivers start with a learner’s permit and spend hours alongside someone more experienced. Mastery doesn’t happen all at once. It’s slow. Often messy. Rarely linear.
But with time, repetition, and support it will click. And the same is true in business, especially when it comes to learning foundational skills like bookkeeping, marketing, or operations.
I started my own business using the skills I built over decades in accounting and IT.
But that didn’t prepare me to market myself or make sales. So I reached out for support. I hired a marketing strategist and joined a sales coaching program. That’s where I get my lessons.
Did I get things “right” the first time? Absolutely not. In fact, I’m still learning and refining as I go.
Do I wish it went faster? Oh yeah. But I know the path to real results is the same: Lesson. Practice. Progress. Repeat.
So I keep at it while continually checking in with mentors, experts, and trusted guides for insight and direction.
And that’s exactly what I offer my clients. Support without judgment. You deserve room and grace to grow—from me, but also from yourself.
How Small Consistent Actions Transform the Messy Middle
When I read the text, I immediately wanted to reach out with a hug. So I did my best with a message.
I reminded my client there was nothing to apologize for. Growth takes time, and every small step forward matters. He wanted to become more organized and respectful of others’ time. I reassured him that learning and adjusting isn’t a waste of mine. It’s the real work that leads to long-term success.
Together, we’ll walk through each of the tools and processes that have kept his business going and growing, and explore ways to improve for more clarity and ease. The shift won’t happen overnight. The best things rarely do. But with gentle, steady adjustments and new habits that stick, we’ll get there.
I suspect that in a year, we’ll look back and marvel at how far things have come—and the messy middle will just be a memory… built through small, consistent actions.
What Small Business Owners Get Wrong About Asking for Help
Too often, I hear things like, “I’m afraid to look at my books” or “I’d be embarrassed for you to see them.”
That’s why I’m especially grateful this client stepped past the fear and shame and asked for help. That’s not weakness, but rather strength. That’s leadership. And that’s exactly what will help him grow and excel in business.
While others stay stuck, struggling with spreadsheets on Sunday nights, he’ll be hiring, investing, and making decisions with clarity and confidence.
And I’m here for every step of it cheering him on.
Encouragement for the Solopreneur in the Middle of It
Dear Reader, if your books aren’t in pristine order—please know: it’s not your fault.
I’ve taken college-level accounting, worked in corporate finance, and built a second career in IT. This is my zone of genius—and even I needed help when I started marketing and selling my own services.
That’s why I meet every client without judgment. You’re not behind. You’re just in your learning curve.
One thing I’ve learned? The fastest way through fear or overwhelm is straight through it. And it’s even better with support.
And if you’re ready, I’d be honored to be your guide.
What’s holding you back?
